Each fall, there is an air of excitement as the school year starts with new teachers, new classrooms and renewed hopes of success. So many of us also remember the fun of shopping for new clothes and school supplies, but sadly, many children living in homeless shelters miss out on both due to their family’s financial situation. The Rubye’s Kids Backpack Project tries to support some of the many children living in Philadelphia shelters by providing 550 sturdy backpacks fully stocked with school supplies to students in grades 1-12.
During the month of July, our generous donors receive a list of school supplies needed. Many of them use this event to help their own children understand the gift of giving and the needs of less fortunate children by shopping together for these items. Other donors contribute financial funds to support the purchase of the 550 backpacks by the Rubye’s Kids organization.
In August, volunteers meet to fill the backpacks with all the school supplies so the shelters can
pick them up for distribution to their students. Each backpack contains a note from the donor to the student who receives it so all the children know that people do care about them and wish them a successful school year and a bright future!
